Pope at the Fener Greek Patriarchate
Continuing his second-day program, Pope Leo XIV arrived at the Fener Greek Patriarchate in Balat. A large number of police were deployed in the area despite the rainy weather. Many tourists filled the streets to catch a glimpse of the Pope. There, he met with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos.
Joint Declaration Signed After Thanksgiving Prayer
Pope Leo XIV spoke at the “Thanksgiving Prayer” event, which was also attended by Patriarch Bartholomeos. He delivered a message of unity among Christians. Thanking Patriarch Bartholomeos, the Pope expressed his wish for “the unity of all Christians.” Following the Thanksgiving Prayer, Pope Leo XIV and Patriarch Bartholomeos signed a joint declaration. The declaration noted the “acknowledgment of obstacles that prevent the full restoration of unity among all Christians, which are being addressed through theological dialogue,” and emphasized that communities are connected by a “shared faith expressed in the Nicene tradition.”
Commemoration Service for Saint Andrew
Pope Leo XIV also attended the commemoration service for Saint Andrew, organized by Patriarch Bartholomeos. In his speech during the service, the Pope stated that his visit to Turkey concluded with this commemoration program. He reflected on past misunderstandings and even conflicts among Christians from different churches, acknowledging the obstacles that remain but stressing the need to continue striving for unity.
